Diagnostic Value of The Fiberoptic Bronchoscopy Samples in Lung Cancer Patients

| Aim: The aim of this study was to review the diagnostic value of bronchoscopic lavage (BL), bronchial brushing (BB) and bronchial mucosal biopsy (BMB) in lung cancer.Material and methods: The cases diagnosed as lung cancer were evaluated. The diagnostic value of the samples of BL, BB and BMB, and the findings of fiberoptic bronchoscopy (FOB) findings were investigated.Results: Eighty four lung cancer cases with the mean age of 62.5 years were evaluated. The diagnostic value of BL, BF and BMB was 58.3%, 61.8%, 87.5% respectively. The diagnostic ratio was increased to 81.8% when the samples of BL and BF were eveluated together. The diagnostic value of BMB was 94.8% in cases with the finding of direct tumor and 65.8% in cases with the finding of indirect tumor. The diagnostic value of BL and BF were similar in cases with direct or indirect tumor findings, the diagnostic value of BMB was higher than BF ve BL and it was determined that the diagnostic ratio of increased 1.39 fold in the cases with direct tumor findings. The diagnostic value of the samples were similar according to the cytological type of tumor.Conclusion: The highest diagnostic value was obtained from the samples of BMB. The diagnostic value of BL was higher than literature. The evaluation of the samples of BL and BF together increases the diagnostic ratio. |
