| In obese cases, there are many complications related to overweight, especially in the cardiovascular, endocrine, and respiratory systems. Obesity hypoventilation syndrome (OHS) is a syndrome diagnosed with the detection of hypoventilation (PaCO2 >45 mmHg) in the measurement of arterial blood gas, end-tidal carbon dioxide, or transcutaneous carbon dioxide while awake, the presence of obesity [body mass index (BMI) >30 kg/m2; the body weight being over 95% percentile in children], and the elimination of the other causes of hypoventilation (lung parenchyma, airway diseases, pulmonary vascular pathologies, chest wall pathologies, the use of medication, neurological diseases, muscular diseases, and other congenital causes) (American Academy of Sleep Medicine, International classification of sleep disorders, American Academy of Sleep Medicine, 2014).
