Özet
This study was aimed at determining the current knowledge status of citrus growers on weeds, methods of weed management and associated problems, factors affecting the chemical weed management, herbicide selection and herbicide application, and human health and environment safety concerns of pesticide application in Muğla province of Turkey. In this context, face-to-face questionnaires were conducted with 80 farmers in 2011. Lack of adequate product price and delay in payments were found to be the most important problems of citrus production in the region. Furthermore, weeds, along with pests and diseases were determined to create significant problems in citrus production. Only 14% of the growers had adequate knowledge on problematic weeds, general biological attributes, losses caused by weeds and their managements. Twenty eight percent of the growers were unfamiliar with any of the weeds while, the rest were partially familiar, however weed species and densities were not taken into account during adopting particular weed management options. Although 78% of the growers have choosen herbicide for weed management, the expected results of weed control were not achieved due to lack of knowledge. Therefore, tillage was employed as frequent weed management option in the region. It was found that growers follow the recommendations of agricultural extension departments and pesticide dealers in pesticide selection procedure. However, the growers did not follow necessary precautions during herbicide application, calibration of spraying equipments and rotation of herbicides with different mechanism of action. The …
