| Özet |
| The aim of this study was to develop a new death anxiety scale and investigate it’s validity and reliability. This studty was carried out with three separate samples which consisted of Gaziosmanpaşa University students. Inductive and deductive approaches were used together for generating the item pool. Developed by the researcher, the Death Anxiety Scale (ÖKÖ), Thorson-Powell Death Anxiety Scale (TPDAS), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS) were used to collect the data in the study. The psychometric properties of the ÖKÖ were analyzed by item-total correlations, exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, t-tests between the means of upper 27% and lower 27%, criterion related validity, internal consistency and test-retest reliability methods. Exploratory factor analysis revealed that the scale contains 20 items within three factors, representing 67.27% of the total variance. Confirmatory factor analysis revealed that the model was well fit. These factors were labeled “ambiguity of death”,“thinking and witnessing death” and “pain”. According to t-test results, differences between the means of upper 27% and lower 27% were significant. Correlations between the ÖKÖ and TP-DAS, Trait anxiety, State anxiety, BDI were. 76,. 43,. 28,. 24, respectively () Internal consistency and two weeks test-retest reliability coefficients were. 95 and. 82, respectively. In conclusion, the Death Anxiety Scale is recommended as a reliable and valid instrument to measure death anxiety levels in Turkish university students. |
